It was great to have John McGough (US Dept. of Health and Human Services), Captain Michael King (SAMHSA Regional Administrator), & Deric Gilliard (US Dept. of Health and Human Services) of the White House Administration visit FOCUS Ministries Reentry Programs this week.
There is much happening in Knoxville that gives us hope we are moving the needle toward change. It is true that "you may have had a past, but you can definitely have a future. We believe in Second Chances!" #FOCUSfam
Let me tell you the story of Courtney. Courtney grew up in a good home with loving parents. However negative influences and a series of bad choices led Courtney into a life of addiction and eventually incarceration.
While in the FOCUS program at jail, Courtney learned of the hope of Christ. This hope propelled her into a life of purpose and meaning. She could not wait to be released and one day reunited with her son. The FOCUS HOPE House became the next step in her journey home.
During her first three months at the HOPE House, Courtney made great strides. She replaced her lost state ID, social security card, and birth certificate. She attended weekly 12-step and intensive outpatient programming. She applied for many jobs before landing one at a department store by the house. She even started attending a local church with a volunteer mentor she met while in jail.
In a matter of months, Courtney went to a lot of places. Each step of the way, FOCUS staffers were there with her. In fact, all of the places Courtney had to go, a FOCUS van was involved. Without the FOCUS van and driver, Courtney would have been on her own to find rides to each of her transition plan appointments; without a driver’s license or vehicle.
Courtney is one of many students that FOCUS serves in this specific way because we believe supportive transportation is essential for true successful reentry.
However, our van fleet is mere miles from the graveyard. Therefore FOCUS is initiating the FOCUS Fleet Program. Our end of year giving goal is to raise $6,000 toward a new van through the University of Tennessee Van Fleet program. As our women’s program expands in 2020, this van is a must.
During this season of giving, would you please consider giving to this great cause. We can not accomplish this mission on our own, your gift is needed! Thank you in advance for your prayers and continued support.
